why oh she codes

When I was working in the music industry, I don’t think I ever really felt weird for being a woman doing my job. No one ever walked up to me and was like oh, you must be personnel or oh, you must be admin. Orchestras still skew male heavy, but I never felt singled out or weird to be a woman in an orchestra.

In the development field, it is not uncommon for me to be the only woman in the room, and in some of those rooms over the years, I have been mistaken to hold lots of jobs besides developer: designer, product manager, project manager.

One has to wonder the why? Is it because I’m a woman? Is it because I forgot to wear a hoodie that day, or maybe my glasses don’t read nerd aesthetic?

Honestly, it doesn’t matter, and I don’t really care. I just smile to myself and wait for their inevitable realization of oh, she codes.
